How to find a lost or stolen iPhone with Find My and other methods

We show how to track and find a lost (or stolen) iPhone or iPad using Find My iPhone, and protect your data even if the battery has died and the iPhone is offline. Also, find out if you can track a lost iPhone with a phone number or another way.

How to Ping your iPhone

The simplest method to find an iPhone, if you’ve got a paired Apple Watch or a HomePod, is to tell those devices to ping the iPhone for you

How to use an Apple Watch to find your iPhone

  • On your Apple Watch, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the Control Centre.
  • On the lefthand side you’ll see an icon of an iPhone with curved lines emanating from it: this is the ping button. Tap it.
  • At this point the iPhone which is paired with this Apple Watch, assuming it’s reachable, will ‘ding’ so you can hear where it is.
  • Keep pinging the phone until you find it.

How to use a HomePod to find your iPhone

  1. Say to your HomePod: “Hey Siri where’s my iPhone?”
  2. If the iPhone is close enough, Siri will hopefully say, “I found [name’s] iPhone near by, should I make it play a sound?”
  3. Say yes and listen out for your iPhone.                                                    It is possible that you will need to turn on Personal Requests for this to work, in which case follow the steps below. You’ll need a device with the Home app on it, so an iPad if you have one. The service also requires iCloud Keychain to be set up on the device you are using.
  4. Open the Home app on your device.
  5. Open the Home app.
  6. Tap on the Home icon.
  7. Tap on your name.
  8. Turn on Personal Requests for the appropriate device(s).
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to find a lost or stolen iPhone using Find My:

1. Access Find My: Make sure you have another device with the Find My app installed or access the Find My website on a computer. You can download the Find My app from the App Store if you don't have it already.

2. Sign in: Use your Apple ID and password to sign in to the Find My app or website. Make sure you use the same Apple ID associated with the lost/stolen iPhone.

3. Locate your iPhone: Once signed in, you should see a list of devices linked to your Apple ID. Tap on the "Devices" tab or click on the "All Devices" dropdown menu on the website, and select the lost/stolen iPhone from the list.

4. View on map: The Find My app will display the last known location of your iPhone on a map. If your iPhone is currently online and can be located, its location will be shown in real-time. You can zoom in or out on the map to get a better view.

5. Enable Lost Mode: If your iPhone isn't in your possession and you suspect it has been stolen, you can activate Lost Mode. This feature allows you to remotely lock your device with a passcode, display a custom message with your contact information, and track its location over time. You can enable Lost Mode directly from the Find My app or website.

6. Play a sound: If you believe your iPhone is nearby, you can use the Play Sound feature to make your device emit a loud sound. This can help you locate it if it's in close proximity.

7. Erase your iPhone (optional): As a last resort, if you are unable to recover your iPhone and are concerned about your personal data falling into the wrong hands, you can remotely erase all the data on your device. However, this action is irreversible, so only use it if necessary.

8. Contact law enforcement: If you believe your iPhone has been stolen, it's essential to report the theft to your local law enforcement agency. Provide them with all the relevant information, including the device's serial number, IMEI number, and any other identifying details.
